What Recruiters Know That You Don’t: They Love People Who Stand Out
If you want to crush your next interview, if you really want to stand out in a good way no matter what your age, here’s what to do. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
Number one, show energy and enthusiasm. Firms get seduced by it; they love passion for what you do. Don’t act like you’re at the end of your career; act like you’re in the middle of it.
Talk outcomes, not numbers of years. No one cares that you have 25 years of experience. Instead, they care about what you’ve done that benefits the organization, like “I increased revenue by 20% last quarter,” not “I have 25 years of experience doing whatever it is you’ve done”.
Demonstrate adaptability somewhere in the stories you tell. Share information about how you adapted to different situations, learned new technologies, or worked for a manager that was younger than you and weren’t the pain in their rear.
Also, ask great questions that are forward-looking. It shows that you’re not focused on the past; you really care about your future.
Remember, it’s not your age. It’s not the number of years of experience that will get you hired. It’s how you can present a solution to what they need to have done that will.
