Paradarami police arrested a 30-year-old lorry driver and his accomplice at a police checkpost on the Tamil Nadu – Andhra Pradesh border near Gudiyatham town in Vellore on Sunday.
Police said the arrested persons, lorry driver B. Muthukalai, 30, and his accomplice R. Senthuran, 47, are residents of Paramakudi. Superintendent of Police, A. Mayilvaganan, had formed special teams to prevent the smuggling and sale of ganja in the district. During a vehicle check at the police check post on the border village, the special police team stopped a lorry and found bundles of ganja that were wrapped with plastic sheets. The contraband was concealed among leather and raw hides that were being transported to a private tannery in Erode district.
During interrogation, the accused Muthukalai told police that they were attempting to smuggle ganja to Tier-II cities like Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Madurai. Subsequently, the duo was arrested. The ganja and the vehicle that was used for transport were also impounded. A case was registered and further probe is under way.
