Based upon advice from Dr. John Sullivan in hbr.org,Ā I offer a way to go about answering this question so that you stand head and shoulders above others.
How to Get More Interviews: Meet More People
Hi, this is Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and Iām back with another one of those tough interview questions. This comes from an article on HBR.org, Harvard Business Review.org. The article is called āSeven Rules for Job Interview Questions That Result in Great Hiresā. In the article, Dr. John Sullivan points out mistakes firms make with interviewing and hiring. He encourages people to recognize that the ability to solve a problem is one of the leading predictors of success on the job.
Dr. Sullivan poses this question: āProvide them with a description⦠hereās a description of an actual problem that youāll face on your first day; walk me through the broad steps that you take in order to solve the problemā. Prior to asking this question in an interview, the interviewer has taken some time to identify certain basic expectations for answering the question. For example, itās important to recognize that an individual would gather data, consult with the team or the customer, and identify success metrics. This is really a variation of the case study interview question, except youāre face to face with the case. As a result, you should think in terms of asking about the resources you have available, the budget, and the time frame. You should also consider who the people are youāre working with, and if they tend to be open or closed in how they communicate. There are lots of different things from a case study you need to draw in to answer the question well. These are many questions to define the terrain for yourself in stepping into this solution.
You should not forget that they ask these questions and then start looking at solutions and options. The goal from their standpoint is to get a sense of how you think and how youāre going to impact their bottom line. They want to know how youāre going to help this department be more effective. You canāt do that unless you know more, and thatās really what this is designed to accomplish.
