The law graduates should remain grounded in strong legal foundations even as the profession evolves in response to new global and technological developments, according to Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Chief Justice of India (CJI).

While delivering the 22nd convocation address at Nalsar University of Law on Sunday, he said mentorship would play a crucial role in shaping ethical and capable lawyers.

On the growing trend of pursuing foreign degrees, he cautioned against doing so merely out of peer pressure while observing that an international qualification is not automatically a marker of excellence. The trend would also reflect a lack of confidence in Indian postgraduate legal education and called for greater investment in LLM post-doctoral programmes within the country.

Srikrishna Deva Rao, Vice-Chancellor Nalsar University of Law, who presented the annual report and academic achievements of the university of the past year, said the university was committed to academic excellence, constitutional values and inclusive growth.

A collaborative project with the Ministry of Social Justice on modernising Special Courts under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was also formally launched on the occasion and the university also announced the establishment of the Square Circle Clinic, India’s pioneering criminal justice clinic,

During the convocation, 462 different degrees including Ph.Ds were presented to the students and scholars, according to a release.
