Lashing out at Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress for allegedly “risking Bengal’s identity” for vote-bank politics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday claimed that only the Bharatiya Janata Party genuinely stands for Bengali ‘ashmita’ and the pride of Bengalis.
Addressing a rally in West Bengal’s Durgapur, Modi launched a scathing attack against the ruling Trinamool Congress in the State, accusing it of encouraging infiltration and putting the country’s national security at stake for the sake of vote-bank politics.
“Because of its vested interests, Trinamool Congress has put the identity of West Bengal at stake. For the sake of vote-bank politics, infiltration is being encouraged here. A complete ecosystem has been created to support infiltrators. This is a threat to both national security and Bengal’s security and identity,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister said that anyone who is not a citizen of India and has entered the country illegally will face legal actions in accordance with the Constitution.
Modi launched a slew of developmental projects worth ₹5,400 crore in West Bengal, unveiling major initiatives across the oil and gas, power, rail and road sectors aimed at boosting infrastructure, connectivity and clean energy in the region.
He laid the foundation stone of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Bankura and Purulia districts of the State. The Bankura & Purulia CGD project, with total cost of ₹1,950 crore, aims to provide 5,55,999 households piped natural gas (PNG) connections. The project is scheduled to be completed by March, 2030.
“Today, the entire world is discussing the resolve for a developed India. Behind this, there are changes visible in India, on which the edifice of a developed India is being built. A major aspect of these changes is India’s infrastructure,” the Prime Minister said.
“Bikoshito Bangla Modir Guarantee (Developed Bengal is Modi’s Guarantee),” he said after unveiling the developmental projects.
Amidst a growing political row over alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled States, Modi said, “The real threat to Bengal’s dignity and future comes not from outside but from within, from a State Government that thrives on lies, lawlessness, and loot.”
“For the BJP, Bengali ‘ashmita’ is supreme. Wherever there is a BJP government, Bengalis are respected, Bengali language is respected,” Modi stated.
“We will not allow this conspiracy against Bengali ‘ashmita’ to succeed. The BJP is the only party that truly respects it,” he added.
Notably, lashing out at the BJP-led Centre for its “policy of harassing” Bengali-speaking people across the country, Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday warned the BJP of dire political consequences if the party did not put an immediate stop to such actions.
Leading a protest march in Kolkata, Banerjee accused the BJP of targeting Bengali-speaking people in the States ruled by the saffron party.
Addressing a rally in Central Kolkata’s Esplanade area after the march, the CM said, “They (Central government) secretly issued a notification in February where it was mentioned that whoever they suspect, should be pushed to detention centres. They sent that notification to BJP-ruled States. We will challenge that notification. This is more than an Emergency. It is illegal detention.”
“I am ashamed and disheartened at the Centre and the BJP’s attitude towards Bengalis. If the illegal detention continues, I will speak in Bengali more — dare to arrest me,” added the Trinamool Congress supremo.
