You know networking is the best way to get interviews but how to you get people to help you? Here’s a simple way to do it.
Should I Stay or Should I Go? Playing “The Counteroffer Game”
If you’re a knowledge worker, you know, someone who works on a laptop most days and got laid off from a job, I want to make a suggestion to you about your first post on LinkedIn and how to get people mobilized to support you. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no-BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
Your first post should not be a “boo-hoo, I got laid off” post. What it should be is an acknowledgment post where you tag people from your former organization who were helpful to you, who you liked, respected, contributed to your success. And by tagging them, what you’re able to do is circle back to them and encourage them to support you in landing the next role. You’ve publicly called attention to their contribution to you and your success, and even though you were laid off, that’s not the point. A lot of people get laid off, and it’s not for poor performance. It’s because companies make decisions that suit their interests. You, unfortunately, were collateral damage as a result.
Acknowledging people from your past, well, it kind of guilts them a little bit. It also encourages them to go out of their way to try and help you. Give it a shot. I hope you never have to, but if you are laid off, even if you’ve posted already that you were laid off, circle back and do this thing. It’s a nice touch for them. They feel good, they want to help.
