India’s defence gets ₹67,000 crore boost: DAC clears strategic military upgrades from night vision to combat drones

In a major push to modernise India’s military capabilities, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on August 5 approved military procurement proposals worth ₹67,000 crore to enhance the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces.

For the Indian Army, the council granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for procuring Thermal Imager-based Driver Night Sights for BMP infantry vehicles. This upgrade is expected to significantly improve night-time mobility and tactical advantage for Mechanised Infantry units.

The Indian Navy will acquire Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, designed for anti-submarine warfare missions, along with BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers, and an upgraded BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile System to bolster maritime surveillance and air defence.
The Indian Air Force received approval for Mountain Radars to strengthen aerial surveillance along rugged border terrains, and an upgrade to the SAKSHAM/SPYDER Weapon System, which will be integrated with the Integrated Air Command and Control System for enhanced air defence coordination.

A key highlight of the approvals is the procurement of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft for all three services. These drones will carry multiple payloads and weapons, enabling long-range surveillance and precision combat missions.

“DAC has also accorded AoN for sustenance of C-17 and C-130J fleets and comprehensive annual maintenance contract of S-400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System,” the press release stated.
