Grandparents Day 2025: Date, history and significance

Similar to Father’s Day and Mother’s Day, we also celebrate our grandparents. This year, Grandparents Day will be observed on September 7 across several nations, including the US, Canada, and India.

History of Grandparents Day

Marian McQuade, a homemaker and social activist from West Virginia, was the driving force behind the concept of a special day for grandparents in America in the 1970s. Having a strong background in elder care, McQuade wished to inspire families to visit nursing facilities and honour the contributions of senior citizens. She encouraged youngsters to ‘adopt’ a grandparent and get to know their life, struggles, and future goals.

As a result of her widespread campaign, in 1978, the US Senate and then-President Jimmy Carter officially declared the first Sunday after Labour Day as National Grandparents Day. Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation on August 3, 1978, and the following year, the day was officially celebrated.

The celebration quickly spread across the world, and while different nations now celebrate it on different dates, the idea of appreciating the elderly for their knowledge and nurturing presence is still the same.
