Grandparents Day 2025: Date, history and significance

[ad_1]

Similar to Father’s Day and Mother’s Day, we also celebrate our grandparents. This year, Grandparents Day will be observed on September 7 across several nations, including the US, Canada, and India.

Grandparents Day is more than just a family reunion; it is a celebration of intergenerational relationships, shared tales, and treasured customs. It is a day set aside to honour the love, wisdom, and life lessons that have been passed down through the generations.

History of Grandparents Day

Marian McQuade, a homemaker and social activist from West Virginia, was the driving force behind the concept of a special day for grandparents in America in the 1970s. Having a strong background in elder care, McQuade wished to inspire families to visit nursing facilities and honour the contributions of senior citizens. She encouraged youngsters to ‘adopt’ a grandparent and get to know their life, struggles, and future goals.

As a result of her widespread campaign, in 1978, the US Senate and then-President Jimmy Carter officially declared the first Sunday after Labour Day as National Grandparents Day. Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation on August 3, 1978, and the following year, the day was officially celebrated.

The celebration quickly spread across the world, and while different nations now celebrate it on different dates, the idea of appreciating the elderly for their knowledge and nurturing presence is still the same.

Significance of Grandparents Day

Pure and unconditional love is the foundation of the bond between children and their grandparents. This day is used to highlight the grandparents’ contributions to raising children and fostering social consciousness in the next generation. Grandparents act as emotional anchors in today’s fast-paced world. Our grandparents are frequently our first connection to our ancestry, and their presence is a combination of love, patience, and direction.

Grandparents Day serves as an important reminder to re-establish relationships, as many modern families choose nuclear arrangements and suffer from the effects of digital estrangement. Through simple visits, phone conversations, video conferences, or handwritten notes, it encourages younger generations to take their time and spend meaningful time with their elders.

How Families Celebrate Grandparents Day

Families celebrate Grandparents’ Day by engaging in various activities that recognise and value the importance of grandparents. These often involve giving gifts, telling stories, spending time together, and showing appreciation for their love and wisdom.

Grandparents Day in 2025 is a significant occasion to honour the people who preserve our wisdom. This day is made even more memorable by taking the time to honour them, no matter how far away they are.
