The West Bengal government on Thursday submitted a progress report before the Calcutta High Court on Kolkata Police’s investigation into the alleged gang-rape of a law student.

A division bench of Justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De examined the case diary as well as the sealed cover report prepared by the police detailing the progress of the investigation into the alleged gang-rape of the 24-year-old student at Kolkata’s South Calcutta Law College on June 25.

The lawyer appearing for the victim told the bench that she is satisfied with the progress of investigation in the case, so far.

The bench, which was hearing public interest litigation (PIL) petitions seeking independent and court-monitored probe in the case, directed the police to furnish another progress report in four weeks. The matter will be heard again on July 17.

4 arrested

Police has arrested four accused—Monojit Mishra, Pramit Mukherjee, Zaib Ahmed and a college guard—so far in the case.

The alleged rape of the woman was led by Mishra, a former student of the law college. He was assisted by Zaib and Mukherjee. The crime took place for over three hours at multiple locations inside the campus, including the students’ union room, the victim said in her complaint.

Mishra, the prime accused in the case, is a former leader of TMCP (Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, Trinamool Congress’s youth wing) of South Calcutta Law College. He was later appointed as a casual employee in the college. He allegedly used the union room premises to extort, threaten and abuse vulnerable students in the past.

The petitioners questioned why the college administration and the local police did not take preventive actions, despite having been allegedly informed of threats to the victim.
