With widespread rains causing heavy losses to crops and properties, a high-level delegation from Telangana, led by its Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, has met Union Minister Amit Shah, seeking financial support from the Union Government.
Pegging the initial estimates of loss at ₹5,000 crore, it asked the Union Government to declare it as a national disaster and release funds accordingly. As many as 22 people lost their lives so far.
The delegation explained to the Home Minister that extensive rainfall from August 25 to 28 caused destruction in districts such as Kamareddy, Medak, Nirmal, and Nizamabad. “Continuous rains have caused heavy losses to government and private property, crops, livestock, and human lives,” Mallu said.
Relief measures
The delegation, which also includes Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswar Rao, said that the State Government mobilised all available resources to carry out relief measures.
The delegation requested the Home Minister to depute a Central team to visit the flood-affected areas and assess the damages.
The Ministers reminded that the State suffered heavy losses last year as well. “We had sought an assistance of ₹11,700 crore. But we have not received any funds from the Centre. We request that you consider releasing ₹16,700 crore, which includes the current requirement of ₹ 5,000 crore,” the memorandum said.
“The Home Minister responded positively to the request. He assured that a Central inter-ministerial team would soon be deputed to Telangana to assess the damages,” a State Government statement said on Thursday.
