‘Drop, Cover, Hold’: NDRF issues safety advisory after strong tremors in Delhi-NCR
In the wake of strong earthquake tremors felt across Delhi-NCR, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has issued a public advisory urging citizens to follow essential safety precautions.
Before an earthquake, residents are advised to consult structural engineers to ensure their homes are earthquake-resistant, repair deep cracks in walls and ceilings, fasten shelves securely, and place heavy objects on lower shelves. The advisory also recommends keeping an emergency kit ready and establishing a family communication plan. Citizens are urged to familiarise themselves with the “Drop, Cover, Hold” technique.
During an earthquake, keeping calm, dropping under a sturdy table, covering the head, and holding on until the shaking stops is recommended by the NDRF. Elevators should not be used, and people outdoors should set a good space from buildings, trees, and poles as they proceed. With circumstances inside vehicles, pulling to an open space and remaining inside is advised.
After the earthquake, it is advised not to enter any building that seems damaged. Those trapped under debris should refrain from using matches and instead tap pipes or walls or blow a whistle to signal for help. Elevators should be avoided, and stairs taken instead.
The NDRF has further urged people to widely propagate these safety guidelines and to keep an eye out for further official updates.
