Coolie trailer: Rajinikanth references Kamal Haasan as he enters Lokesh Kanagaraj’s violence-soaked universe, Aamir Khan and Nagarjuna in tow | Tamil News

After teasing the film in April last year, the Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie trailer is finally here. The action-thriller film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is all set to hit the theaters on 14 August when it will go head-to-head with Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 at the box office. Coolie also stars Telugu star Nagarjuna, Kannada actor Upendra, Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir and Bollywood star Aamir Khan in cameo appearance along with actors Sathyaraj and Shruti Haasan.

Rajinikanth had followed a similar format for his previous films Vettaiyan and Jailer. While Vettaiyan starred Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati and Manju Warrier, Jailer had Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff in prominent roles. Both emerged as box office hits after the failure of his earlier films Annaatthe and Darbar.

The Coolie trailer stars with a monologue: “When someone is born, their death is already written in their hands.” The trailer then introduces the character of Soubin, who says, “If there’s an option to wipe out a person without a trace in this world, it will spell disaster.”

We get a blink-and-miss appearance of actor Aamir Khan as Dhaa, followed by Nagarjuna, and Sathyaraj.

Soubin says, “Among the 14,000 present here, I am looking for one Coolie! The one and only Coolie.” The Coolie is none other than Rajinikanth.

Festive offer

A dialogue in the background introduces him. “For 30 years, I have had someone offline on standby. If he comes to know…”

Rajinikanth makes a stunning entry with Aniruddh Ravichander’s background music. He plays a former gold smuggler trying to revive his former glory. The trailer soon introduces actor Upendra’s character, who too seems to be a Coolie.

While the makers don’t reveal the plot as such, they promise a mass entertainer to the superstar’s fans. A moment stands out when he and Shruti Haasan talk about ties that bind them to a man — for Shruti, it is her father while Rajinikanth’s character says that he is his friend first. Many read the exchange as a Kamal Haasan reference that is likely to bring the house down

The makers had organised a grand trailer launch event which was attended by actor Rajinikanth and the entire crew including actors Aamir Khan and Shruti Haasan at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium

Coolie gets A certificate

Coincidentally, Coolie has emerged as Lokesh Kanagaraj’s first film to get an adults only certificate. It is also Rajinikanth’s first film to get an A certificate since the 80s. This certification restricts the film to adults-only audience, impacting its pull on family audiences. This is awarded to films with strong violence, sexual content, or offensive language.

Lokesh Cinematic Universe

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe) now encompasses some of the biggest actors in India. What started with Karthi’s Kaithi (2019), expanded with Kamal Haasan’s Vikram (2022) and Vijay’s Leo (2024) is going to include Kaithi 2, Vikram 2, a standalone ‘Rolex’ film starring Suriya and Leo 2 besides Coolie.

The film marks the 171st project of Rajinikanth since his debut in 1975. The film, produced by Sun Pictures, has Anirudh Ravichander as its music composer, whose latest work was seen in Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom. The film will release in multiple languages and will be also available in D-Box and 4DX formats.
