Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and I wanna talk with you about one of those tough interview questions that I know have hung a number of people because a client of mine told me the story. So, here’s today’s tough interview question. Ready? What did I have for lunch? This was posed. The person’s been on five interviews. Three by phone; two in-person. Flown in and he’s finally meeting the business people for the function he’s going to be supporting, and one of the questions that gets asked is, what did I have for lunch? Now, I know in another video, I tell relatively inexperienced people, what do I have in my pocket? The answer was twenty dollars, one hundred dollars, and how to answer that.
But when you’re a veteran individual, one of the things that they want to see that you can do is look them square in the eye in an uncomfortable situation, not throw them in a bull, and just simply say, “I don’t know”. And when they say, “you don’t know?” “Yes, I don’t know. Now, I can make up a story for you and I’m sure it will be very plausible, but the fact of the matter is, I don’t know”. And isn’t that exactly what you want someone to be able to say when they don’t know an answer and they are there to help you? Is coming up with a clever retort better for you? No, of course, not. Isn’t it better they just say, “I don’t know?”
