Samsung is facing fresh threat of labour protest at the Sriperumbudur plant, with the Samsung India ‘Thozhilalar Sangam’, backed by the Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU), is planning a protest on July 17 in Kancheepuram. The union is urging the company to revoke the suspension of 23 workers.
A poster on the protest issued by the union on Monday also said that the company should return the illegal salary deductions of the suspended workers and also urged the District administration to intervene for violating Indian laws.
Samsung had earlier said that it took action against the 23 suspended workers who were involved in ‘indiscipline’ activities inside the factory. However, the union now claims the number to be 25.
CITU leader E Muthukumar will lead the protest, which will also be attended by former Member of Parliament T Rangarajan and former MLA A Soundararasan , the notice added.
In March, the union withdrew the month-long strike after the company agreed to reinstate the striking workers. However, the company stated that the 23 workers under the Suspension Pending Enquiry, would undergo the Disciplinary Action Proceedings.
Subsequently, the CITU-backed union issued a 14-day strike notice to the company in April, urging Samsung management to reinstate the 23 suspended workers and withdraw complaints filed against them.
A Samsung India spokesperson said: “Samsung is committed to a respectful and harmonious workplace and has zero tolerance for any illegal activities that disrupt industrial peace. In line with this policy, certain workers in the Chennai factory had been suspended, pending enquiry, to protect the work environment. We remain focused on fostering a safe and respectful environment for all our workers.”
