The state’s tourism sector is struggling to recover after the Pahalgam attack

The restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is essential for the beleaguered tourism sector of the State reeling under the fallout of Pahalgam terrorist attack to revive, says Tanvir Sadiq, Chief Spokesperson of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and member of J&K legislative assembly.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Kerala Urban Conclave in Kochi on Friday, he said the Union Government is not showing any inclination to restore the statehood despite holding the legislative elections successfully.

“The Government has promised to restore the statehood as early as possible after holding the elections. But they have not shown any initiative, even one year after the state elections,” he said.

Sadiq said the state’s tourism sector is struggling to recover after the Pahalgam attack.

“The sector is still struggling to regain normalcy. The tourism industry has suffered a loss of hundreds of crores due to cancellations,” he said.

The magnitude of the losses could be gauged from the fact that a hotel room in Gulmarg, worth ₹70,000 per night, was sold at ₹20,000 following the attack, he pointed out.

Helping industry

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is making every effort to help the tourism industry in the state, he said. The Chief Minister has visited states like Gujarat to convey a message that it is safe to visit Kashmir.

Restoration of statehood is very important to accelerate this process and bring to dual power centres. “At the moment, the state government is unable to undertake policy-level decisions as everything needs the permission of the Lieutenant Governor. The dual power centre is a cumbersome process for a smooth and successful administration,” Sadiq said.

The Government has reorganised Jammu and Kashmir as two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir (with a legislative assembly) and Ladakh (without a legislative assembly) in 2019 after abrogating Article 370, granting special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
