The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Aravali, its newest shore-based facility, at Gurugram on Friday, to bolster national maritime strategic information and communication infrastructure.
Named after the ancient and resilient Aravali mountain range, the INS Aravali will be commissioned in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff.
INS Aravali is designed to support naval information and communication centres that are critical to India’s maritime security, command and control operations, and Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). The base’s establishment marks a strategic step forward in the Navy’s efforts to enhance situational awareness and inter-agency coordination across India’s maritime domain.
Guided by the motto ‘सामुद्रिकसुरक्षायाः सहयोगं’ — meaning ‘Maritime Security through Collaboration’ — the base embodies a spirit of cooperation with other naval units, MDA centres, and allied stakeholders, said Navy officials.
The crest of INS Aravali features a central mountain symbol, representing the steadfast strength of the Aravali range, and a rising sun, signifying eternal vigilance, resilience, and the dawn of advanced technological capabilities in communications and domain awareness. The emblem reflects the base’s commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime interests through constant readiness and innovation.
The Indian Navy in July signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) for the implementation of the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) Project. The initiative aimed at strengthening coastal and maritime security through an integrated approach to data collation, analysis, and information sharing among multiple maritime stakeholders.
A key component of this project includes upgrading the existing National Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (NC3I) Network to the more advanced NMDA Network, and incorporating AI-enabled software for real-time analysis and response.
As part of the upgrade, the Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) in Gurugram — currently the nodal centre for the NC3I Network — will be transformed into a Multi-Agency NMDA Centre, with representatives from various national security and intelligence agencies.
The entire NMDA project will be executed on a turnkey basis under the administration of the Indian Navy.
