Kerala’s talent pool witness 172% growth, says LinkedIn Talent Insights report

Kerala’s workforce is experiencing rapid growth and transformation. A new LinkedIn Talent Insights report shows a 172 per cent increase in the State’s professional talent pool over the last five years.

The report was published at the Skill Kerala Global Summit here. According to the findings, this growth places Kerala 9th among Indian states with nearly 40 per cent of its workforce concentrated in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Kozhikode.

The most common roles among professionals include software engineers, accountants, and teachers, reflecting a blend of technology, finance, and education as the backbone of Kerala’s economy.

One of the report’s key findings is the significant inflow of skilled professionals returning from abroad, particularly the Gulf region. About 52 per cent of Kerala’s global returnees came from the UAE. They bring expertise in business operations, finance, and entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, regional migration — led by Karnataka — has strengthened Kerala’s innovation and technology talent pool. This includes rising inflows in product management, research, and education.

Skill development has also taken center stage, with initiatives like the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) and the Knowledge Economy Mission driving a surge in upskilling programs. Participation in digital and professional training has doubled in the past two years, with emerging skills such as artificial intelligence, data analysis, and financial planning topping the list.

The report also highlights that 39 per cent of core job skills are expected to change or become obsolete by 2030, underscoring the urgency of reskilling efforts.

Kerala is well-aligned with India’s top hiring industries such as IT services, finance, healthcare, and manufacturing, but the state also has untapped potential in biotechnology, automation, and advanced analytics. Gender representation is another positive highlight, with women making up 37 per cent of the workforce—well above the national average of 30 per cent.

Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, said the State is on a mission to transform into a knowledge-based innovative society, advancing into a new era of digital literacy and comprehensive progress that includes everyone.

Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal described the talent report as an economic roadmap that provides a window into the state’s human capital.

K.M. Abraham, Executive Vice Chairman of K-DISC, called the report a significant step in aligning Kerala’s youth with the needs of the modern workforce. He emphasized that it offers data-driven insights into the State’s talent pool and will help higher education become more responsive to the evolving job market.

Kumaresh Pattabiraman, Head of LinkedIn India, expressed happiness in collaborating with the Kerala Government on skill development. He expressed hope that the report will help the State move forward in its mission of preparing a skilled and competitive workforce.
