“On the list of things you want to do in life, fixing your resume is right up there with hitting yourself in the head with a hammer.”― Martin Yate CPC

I miss my wife. She has been gone for a few week,s and although we speak regularly over WhatsApp (she’s in the lake country of England) , it isn’t the same as having those regular conversations that seem like nothing but mean everything. Tomorrow I finally start treatment after several weeks of prep. 3 weeks of radiation treatment M-F for 15-20 minutes daily. I feel great and if I skip a week of this newsletter, you’ll understand why.

People hire me for No BS job search coaching because I make finding work much easier. I don’t write resumes, although I do critique resumes. I leave it to people who are experts at that. I am someone who has helped tens of thousands of people find work. I have free information available at JobSearch.Community. Also, scroll down to receive my Wednesday email with job search advice. Becoming an Insider at any level gives you access to all my video courses, books and guides to job search, the abililty to ask me questions and, if you choose an option above the lowest tier, you can receive job search coaching from me, too.

“7 Salary Negotiation Tactics Your Boss Hopes You Never Learn”

Negotiating your salary isn’t just about asking for more money—it’s about positioning yourself as the obvious choice to get it. Whether you’re starting a new job or trying to improve your pay and benefits where you are now, the same principles apply: preparation, strategy, and the confidence to back it up.

Here are seven proven tips that can help you walk away with more than you thought possible.

1. Know Who You’re Talking To

Figure out exactly who holds the decision-making power. Are you negotiating with HR, or will you be speaking directly to your manager? If HR is the gatekeeper, talk to your boss first so they can support your case. A manager’s endorsement can be a game-changer.

2. Script Your Case in Advance

Negotiations often go sideways because people let emotions take over. Decide exactly how you’ll present your number or package, and rehearse it. Avoid vague ranges that invite lowball offers. If you’re thinking $65,000, don’t say “I was hoping for somewhere between $60 and $70.” You’ve just given them permission to go low.

3. Anticipate the Pushback

Put yourself in the other person’s seat. What concerns or objections might they raise? How can you counter them? Employers respect candidates who understand both sides of the table.

4. Be on Time—Every Time

Being late—even virtually—kills your momentum before you start. Test your Zoom, Teams, or Webex setup ahead of time. If something goes wrong, alert them right away.

5. Build Rapport Before You Dive In

Small talk matters. It sets the tone, breaks down walls, and builds chemistry. Smile, keep an open posture, show genuine interest, and match their conversational style. People say yes more often to people they like.

6. Prove You’re Worth It

You can’t just say you deserve more—you have to show it. Highlight your track record, results, and testimonials. Remind them of what you’ve delivered in the last year. People pay for proven performance, not potential.

7. Negotiate More Than Money

If the budget is “locked,” shift gears. Can they cover commuting costs, add PTO days, or offer remote work flexibility? Don’t get trapped in a one-issue standoff—widen the playing field.

💡 Bottom line: If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Employers aren’t mind readers, and no one’s going to hand you more money out of the goodness of their heart. Be prepared, stay calm, and make the ask.
